The municipality of Loulé, in the faro district, is located in the Algarve (NUT II and NUT III). It is bordered to the west by Silves and Albufeira, to the east by S. Brás de Alportel, Alcoutim and Tavira, to the north by Almodôvar (Beja district), to the south and southeast by Faro and southwest by the Atlantic Ocean. It occupies an area of 765 km2, distributed in 11 parishes: Almansil, Alte, Ameixial, Boliqueime, Quarteira, Querença, Salir, São Clemente, São Sebastião, Benafim and Tôr.

In 2005, the municipality of Loulé had 61,246 inhabitants.

The natural or inhabitant of Loulé is called Louletan.

It has a temperate Mediterranean climate, with hot and dry summers and mild winters; precipitation occurs essentially in winter and autumn.
Its water resources are the Quarteira river, the Moinhos stream, the Algibre river, the Mercês stream and the Carcava river.

At the level of relief are to highlight the serra do Caldeirão and the hills of Alfeição (324 m), Cumeada do Malhão (381 m) and Malhão (537 m).
The municipality of Loulé is integrated in the area of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, which corresponds to a lagoon system along 60 km, and is part of the list of wetlands of the Ramsar Convention. In it there are nurseries for bivalve molluscs. The bird life is very rich, being even a greening area of birds from the North and Central europe. The municipalities covered by the park are Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António.
