Praia do Vau is an ocean beach in the municipality of Portimão, in the Algarve, Portugal. It has a sandy beach flanked by gentle cliffs. It is a tranquil beach, being known for its iodine and the clay of the cliffs, as well as for the irregular rock formations.
Sheltered between coppery cliffs, Praia do Vau has a small but very beautiful sandy beach, where the calm sea completes the perfect setting to rest.
Very popular during the summer, the village by the beach has a lot of entertainment and restaurants where you can taste delicious fresh fish dishes.
The ochre and red cliffs that mark the ends of the beach lower until they stop at the central stretch of the beach. To the interior, there are several tourist facilities and the urbanizations of Vau with their garden areas.
Much of the vegetation around the beach is exotic (cigarette trees, figs and cacti), having been introduced in a vain attempt to stabilize these cliffs, which are extremely vulnerable to contact with rainwater and the sea.
On the edge of the sand, in the direction of Barranco das Canas or Praia dos Careanos, the cliff rises and is covered by typical vegetation, especially barrilla and salgadeira, species resistant to salt-laden sea winds.
The rocky walls, heavily sculpted by erosion, form nooks and crannies that delight bathers. On the cliffs surrounding the beach it is possible to access breathtaking views of this coastline, especially Ponta João d'Arens, and observe the karst shape of the rock formations.
