Praia da Luz is a beach located 7 km from Lagos (Algarve, Portugal) in the village of Luz. Being a fishing village, it now has several tourist complexes for holidays.
It is a holiday area that receives every year tourists of various nationalities (mainly Portuguese, Spanish, English, French and German). The medieval Church of Luz de Lagos, located in the village of Luz, was remodelled in 1521. During the 15th and 16th centuries it suffered several sacks which made it necessary to build protective walls around it. It was severely damaged during the 1755 Tsunami. Later, in 1874, its restoration was financed by contributions from local residents. In the 20th century, a violent storm and the 1969 earthquake caused further damage to the church, making it necessary to renovate it again.
Due to the existence of the beach, the locality is visited by numerous tourists, Portuguese and foreigners, the latter being mainly of British origin. The high presence of tourists and also of residents of this nationality originated the opening of several bars and other distinctly English tourist establishments
