Algarve city, seat of municipality and district capital, is located in the Algarve. It is situated on the southern coast of mainland Portugal, being separated from the Atlantic Ocean by several so-called Faro ria and sandy islands. It is bordered to the north by the district of Beja.
The municipality has 201.2 km2 and has six parishes: Faro (S. Pedro), Faro (Sé), Conceição, Santa Bárbara de Nexe, Estói and Montenegro. Not exceeding 20 meters of altitude, it is 298 kilometers from Lisbon and 548 kilometers from Porto.
In 2005, the municipality had 58,060 inhabitants, the natural or inhabitant of Faro is called Farense.
The city is served by roads, railways and an airport. Faro is an area of intense tourism, not only in the bathing season but also in the months of January and February, during which the flowering of almond trees transmits to the Algarve landscape an amazing beauty.
The district stretches from west to east and features a vast south coast, where it is facing, and a sparse western coastline. It has the particularity of encompassing the entire Algarve region, which is subdivided into three sub-regions: mountains, barrocal and coastline, in this order from the interior to the coast. The mountain reaches 902 meters of altitude in Foia, constituting as a natural border between the Lower Alentejo and the Algarve. The barrocal is a narrow strip dominated by the heaths and the coastline is more rugged to the west than the east, along an extension of more than 200 kilometers.
The climate is temperate, mediterranean in feature. Its mild temperatures, with mild winters and hot, dry and long summers, together with the vast seafront, are strong attractions for tourism.
